Colic in Baby

Experiencing the birth of a baby is very exciting. However, it proves to be intimidating if the baby suffers from colic. Practically all babies experience colic. But when the baby experiences it, it becomes a nightmare for the others who have to listen to the baby’s incessant crying! It’s even worse thinking that the baby is in pain. In such situations, you are bound to feel helpless and distressed and that your mothering skills may not be enough! You also tend to feel tired as the baby keeps you awake, and perhaps at the end of your tether.

There never has been a proven theory as to why some babies are more prone to developing colic than others. One theory is that some babies have a less mature or an increased sensitive digestive system than others have. The digestive system of a newborn baby contains few enzymes or digestive juices that are needed to digest the food they eat. So the processing of the milk the baby drinks can become a difficult process which in turn leads to painful wind.

A baby suffering from colic get sharp, intermittent abdominal pains and cramps. It is more prevalent in babies who drink from the bottle. Even preterm babies have been associated to suffer from colic, maybe due to their more immature digestive system. Babies suffering from colic are considered all parents’ nightmares, as the baby tends to cry incessantly. As it is so obvious that the baby is in pain, it makes the parents feel helpless just watching them cry in pain. Moreover, since the baby is very young, the parents can’t actually give them anything to cure the colic.

It is usually a few days after birth that the baby starts suffering from colic. They then tend to pull their legs up in pain, or stretch them out. They will also cry if they had been fed when the pain was at it’s worst. There is usually a particular time when the colic seems to be at the worst for the baby, and this can be any time of the day. It is very distressing for the parents when the baby cries incessantly. Sometimes the colic gets so bad that it lasts all day or even all night. In such situations, the parents even consider getting some help from either the doctor or the health visitor.

Usually the bottle fed babies develop colic. If colic is present in a breast fed baby, then it is the mother who should look at her diet. She should find out if there is anything that she eats that may not agree with the baby. Usually, breast feeding mothers eat whatever they want. But if the baby has an especially sensitive digestive system, then it is better to ensure that the mother’s diet is not the one causing the colic symptoms.  One of the main foods that have been proven to have an effect on babies is dairy products. So if your breast fed baby is colicky, then you could try cutting down on them. This just might stop the colic. Similarly, cut down any other foodstuff you feel may be the culprit, and see if the baby’s colic improves.
