Convulsions
An uncontrolled twitching or jerking movement of the arms, legs or both is convulsions. During convulsions some may also have a twitching and upturning of the eye balls as well as a clenching of the teeth. After convulsing some will become unconscious and pass urine or stools. There are many causes of convulsions including a high fever, bleeding, injury and meningitis. Most convulsions only last a few seconds and are very short in duration. Lay the child on their back and turn their head to the left or the right during convulsions so that the secretions can flow out of the mouth and the tongue doesn’t fall back into the throat obstructing the wind pipe. If the convulsions are of a long duration you should call the doctor and if they are not available then you should take the child to the nearest hospital.
The most common cause of convulsions is a high fever. The child should be given emergency treatment for a high fever if this is the case. Holding their breath while crying can be another cause of convulsions in children. This condition typically disappears as the child grows older and these breath holding spells aren’t serious.
