All About Baby Diapers

Diapers are available in various materials, shapes and sizes. The best kind are soft, absorbent and strong enough to withstand constant laundering.

How to put on a napkin?

There are two ways to put on a napkin.

One-pin method: Fold the napkin into a triangle. Place the napkin under the buttocks with one corner lying between the legs and then join all three corners of napkin with one pin in front. This method is best suited for a tiny baby, but when the baby moves around, use the two-pin method.

Two-pin method: This is also known as the American method. Fold the napkin in half, turning one end over about six inches. Place baby on the napkin face up. Draw the loose end up between the legs and fasten firmly on each hip. You get special safety pins for babies, which are large enough for easy handling and with plastic heads to prevent accidental injury; besides there is less chance of their opening. Always make sure when using a pin that the sharp end of the pin faces away from the baby. The diaper should be changed as soon as it is wet. When you change the diaper, wash the baby with plain water to which a little eau-de-cologne has been added, dry the area well, dust with baby powder before putting on the clean diaper. To clean the baby after a bowel movement, use baby soap and water in a washcloth. Rinse the soap off well, dry the baby thoroughly, sprinkle powder and then put on the diaper.

How to wash the napkins?

Napkin washing becomes a tedious task when they are allowed to accumulate. Once you buy the necessary equipment, napkin washing becomes a simple matter and part of the daily regular routine. Go in for buckets with covers. Fill the bucket with water and mix in a few drops of Dettol. As you take off the diapers, soak them in the soapy solution for sometime, then squeeze the soapy water out and put the nappies in the Dettol solution. Let them soak in it for half-an-hour, then squeeze out the water. Dry the napkins in open air and sunshine. Iron them before use. To wash dirty napkins, shake the loose stools into the lavatory and rinse with running water, then follow the procedure of washing them as described above. When traveling with a baby, it is useful to arrange a piece of lint or a pad of cotton wool inside the napkin. When the baby soils it with stools, it prevents the napkin from being soiled; you can simply throwaway the soiled lint. Similarly, rubber pants are a convenience while traveling but they should only be used while traveling. They prevent the air from circulating around the infant's body and increase moisture, thus increasing the possibility of diaper rash.
