DiphtheriaChildren are the ones who are commonly affected by this disease. Diphtheria starts with a slight fever which may rise to l02°P. The throat may show a deep red color in the beginning but in a day or two a greyish skin will be seen about the tonsils. An early diagnosis of diphtheria is of utmost importance to save a child's life. Therefore whenever a child appears to be ill with fever complains of a pain in the throat, seems dull and apathetic send for a physician immediately to examine her. If the diagnosis is not made promptly and antitoxin is not given in sufficient quantities immediately then the swelling in her throat becomes large, hemorrhages begin, the voice becomes high pitched and strangled, followed by drowsiness, delirium and death. TreatmentAs soon as you suspect a case of diphtheria call your doctor at once. Keep the child in bed and free from all exertions, because in this disease there is always a danger to the heart. The diet should be liquid and contain enough sugar to overcome loss of energy from the body because of fever, Vitamins B & C should be given in large quantities. The only known medicine for this disease is anti diphtheria serum and the earlier it is injected into the body of the child the greater are her chances of survival. If the disease has broken out into your neighbourhood have your child inoculated with diphtheria toxid immediately and forbid her from going anywhere near the patient. Do not come in direct touch with the patient. All her clothes, utensils and dishes should be sterilized. The person who takes care of her should protect himself by wearing, masks over his face. The patient should not be allowed to come in contact with anyone, until she has been shown to be free of the germs by cultures of the throat taken two days in succession and proven negative. |
