Epilepsy

A disorder of the nervous system characterized by temporary loss of consciousness, convulsions or both is epilepsy. A child may fall to the floor and lose consciousness in a major attack. Arm and legs may jerk and the body may become stiff with an occasional loss of control over bowel and bladder. A few seconds to a few minutes are the typical duration of the attacks. Either once a day or as seldom as once a year can be the frequency of the attacks. Call your doctor as soon as a child has an attack. Lower your child to the floor in the meantime and to prevent them from biting their tongue place a rolled clean handkerchief in their mouth. In case they lose their bowel and bladder control you should be prepared. Until they regain consciousness you should let them rest quietly and don’t force any liquids or food down their throat. There are medicines that can completely cure the disease but this can only happen if you show your child to the doctor at regular intervals and follow the prescribed treatment carefully since an attack can recur if there is any break in the medication routine.
