Pneumonia: Causes and Treatment

A child may give rise to whooping cough and other dangerous disease if they have pneumonia which makes it a serious disease. A severe chill is the first sign of pneumonia and it is usually as a result of standing neglected in the cold for a long period of time. The rate of breathing in increased and it is accompanied by a cough that is dry and painful. Other symptoms include a reddish face, blisters on the lips, headache, nausea and vomiting. The disease becomes worse if it is neglected and the sputum becomes tinged with blood which is quickly followed by a very high fever and then death.

The fever will persist for five to ten days and occasionally longer if there are no complications. One of the most striking features of this disease is the fact that it typically improve after a crisis. The patient seems on the verge of cobias when the crisis occurs. At this time the temperature drops rapidly, the child perspires freely, the breathing and pulse rate slow before the patient looks and feels better and then drops into a quiet sleep.

Treatment

Have open windows and make your child lie in a clean bed in a clean room. You should keep the child warm, especially their feet by placing woolen socks, hot water bottles or a heating pad on them. The bowels should be kept clean by warm water enema or some light purgative while a dose of Epsom salts should be given at the onset. Plenty of water and lime juice should be given to the child. Your child should be given more water and fruit juice if there has been an elimination of fluid through vomiting or bowel movement. The child’s diet should consist of soft foods and liquids such as soups, hers and juices. To relieve pain and cough regular fomentation should be given on the chest. Effective treatment of this disease comes from penicillin and sulfadaizine tablets.

You should consult your doctor before administering these medicines. Make your child lie in bed for a week or longer after they have completely recovered otherwise a relapse may occur and this second time can be fatal. Giving your child an adequate diet will help prevent them from getting the disease by keeping them healthy and strong. Unhealthy bodies become a breathing ground for different diseases. Never give your child a bath after they have perspired due to heat or an outing and certainly never leave them neglected in the cold.
