Tuberculosis Information

An infectious disease that typically attacks the lungs, tuberculosis can also attack other parts of the body. Loss of energy, poor appetite, loss of weight and fever are the early symptoms. Chest pain and persistent cough can develop later on. You should take your child to the doctor immediately if these symptoms appear. The doctor will take a chest x-ray and perform a tuberculosis skin test in addition to a complete physical exam.

To control this disease in recent years powerful new medicines have been developed. Tuberculosis-meningitis is the most serious form of this disease in these days and it is an infection that attacks the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, it can be effectively treated. Like other contagious diseases it can be easily prevented if you give your child a B.C.G. vaccination. Follow the precautions below in addition to the vaccination if you don’t want your child to get this dreadful disease.

  • If you child has persistent cough, cold, fever or has chest pains and loss of weight then you should get immediate medical advice.
  • Make sure you feed your child a nourishing diet and give them many opportunities to rest, play and sleep.
  • Have your child examined at once if they are in close contact with someone who develops this disease. Once your child is born let your doctor know if you have a family history of the disease so they will be able to guide you and tell you about precautions you can take to protect your child.
  • Before entering your house make sure any domestic help gets a chest x-ray and a complete physical exam since those who don’t observe the basic rules of hygiene and can’t afford a nutritious diet can have tuberculosis.
