All About Worms

Many kinds of worms inhibit a human body causing untold damage to the child affected by them. Every case of suspected worm, infection should be brought to the attention of the doctor, who will have the patient's stool . tested and then prescribe appropriate medicine after identifying the worm. Some of the common worms are:

1. Roundworms

They resemble earthworms in size and appearance. Roundworm infestation is very high areas where hygienic conditions are poor and where children ease themselves inside and outside the house. These worms cause weight loss, abdominal pain and vomiting. The eggs of this worm are ingested by the child while playing in contaminated soil or eating unwashed and uncooked fruits and vegetables. These worms can be avoided if children are taught clean personal habits and instructed to eat only well-cooked and hygienically prepared food and drink only boiled water.

2. Pinworms

They are small worms which are about half an inch in length and they live in the intestines. They are usually noticed when they come out from the child's anus at night and cause severe itching. These eggs enter the nails of the child while scratching her anus or pass into the clothes. The child swallows them while eating with her fingers or gets them from the clothes she wears. In this way the child can infect other members of the family also. If the child complains of itching in her anus take her to the doctor at. once and have her stools examined.

3. Hookworms

Hookworms generally infect older children and adults. Eggs of the hookworm pass out with the faeces onto the soil. When the children walk barefooted or handle this soil these worms enter through their skin and through a complicated cycle develop into adult worms in the intestines. These worms cause fatigue, severe anemia, aches, nausea and changes in the child's bowel habits. Iron medications with a nourishing diet improves the condition of the child. To avoid them children should be taught to habitually wear shoes, not to play in the mud and use clean toilets.
