Bladder and Bowel Training

When a child is nine or ten months old is the best time to start bowel training since this is when a child can sit on the toilet without any support. Gaining control over bladder and bowels is not a conscious effort for a baby so even at this stage it is difficult to start training. As the baby grows up she gradually gains control because the organs mature along with the babies age and they can hold their bowel motion for a sufficiently long time. Bladder and bowel functions remain a completely involuntary process that is beyond the babies control until twelve months of age. The mother is taken completely unawares since the lower intestine empties itself so suddenly and without warning when it is full. It is a complete waste of time to start toilet training prior to one year of age. During this period all a mother can do is keep track of bowel movements and watch the child. After their morning feed most babies pass their first and only motion for the day. A baby who is naturally regular is fairly easy to know the bowel movement whereas a baby with several bowel movements at odd hours of the day is difficult to predict. A mother should not be disgusted if a baby passes their stools on the floor when they have no diaper on and then play with and possible even put some of it in their mouth since for a baby it is not something dirty.

Seeing stool is a new thing for the baby and as with any new thing babies want to put it in their mouth to see what it is. As a baby turns one year old they start to realize that stools are a disgusting thing and that they shouldn’t be touched. It is at this time that a baby also learns to use certain words or sounds to alert the mother. Many children start their training themselves during this age since they like to stay clean and dry, as well as they are trying to imitate adults when they see them using the toilet. A nice, durable and attractive potty is a good investment for parents to make.

The market has a number of colorful and well designed potties available. Many of these are easy to carry, clean and very economical. A child should be attracted to it and learns toilet training without the mother putting forth much effort is the main purpose of buying a potty. Naturally a child will be curious to use it and may even go to it with great enthusiasm if they are so interested in it. A nuisance can be created for the mother if the child is so proud of their new possession that they like to sit on it after the interval of every few minutes. However, this nuisance is worth it since a child can learn toilet training at a young age without much effort on the part of the mother. Make sure your child doesn’t suffer form constipation while using the potty since this can cause pain passing the stools. The child may not sit on the potty again because they dread the repetition of hurt passing stools. Include prune juice, prunes, figs and beetroot to the child’s diet to keep the stools soft. Loud scoldings and naggins will only worsen the situation if the child doesn’t cooperate. The child will rebel the mother out of resentment and soil their diapers. Stop training and restart later when they are little older is the best thing you can do. Child like to please their mother when they are one and a half to two years old so they will try to use the potty since they feel their mothers likes that and will train their bowel control in an effort to please their mother. The child typically reaches the final stages of training by two to two and a half years. By this time the child will go to the bathroom on their own and call to the mother to help clean up. Accidents will still happen occasionally, mostly when they are out or occupied playing games or with diarrhea, but complete control often comes at three years of age.

Bowel control comes first followed by bladder control a little later. Since a baby is only kept on fluids they will wet themselves very often during the first six months. A baby will hold their urine for longer intervals as they age to a year old when they can hold their bladder for as long as two hours. A baby will rarely wet themselves if a mother puts the child on the potty every two hours. A child will make some sound whenever they want to pass urine once they become accustomed to the potty. By the age of two a child can control their urine for five hours and they will stay dry throughout the night by two and a half with the occasional accident when they can’t control their urine. Sometimes a three year old will ask to be taken to the toilet when they wake up in the middle of the night. Often by three a child may proudly announce to the parents that she is going to the potty when she catches an accident before it happens because they are conscious of their bodily functions. Even after three some children wet the bed regularly and a few may do it up until the age of twelve and thirteen. Since it is an involuntary process that they have no control over and usually they feel guilty about it you should scold a child when they wet the bed. A child will feel embarrassed and depressed if you scold them and they will often avoid going out at night due to a fear of wetting someone’s bed and being ridiculed and shamed by outsiders. Children will either become submissive, depressed and very quiet or they will become aggressive and undisciplined. A mother should reassure the child that nothing is wrong with them and that they will be cured as they get older rather than scolding. Before going to bed a parent should make sure the child doesn’t take any fluid and before they go to sleep make them visit the toilet. The child should be taken to a doctor if this doesn’t work to see if there is a physical defect such as a malformation of the kidneys or the urinary system, a tight foreskin of the penis or irritation of the genitalia. The conditi_n can usually be corrected if it is found a child is suffering from any of the above conditions. Severe emotional stress may cause a child to start wetting the bed. The arrival of a new baby in the family, sudden death in thž family, pareYts quarreling and a mother going back to work are the usual causes of emotional stress forJGhildre;ó
