A Guide to Each Stage of PregnancyThe fertilization of the egg is obviously the first stage of pregnancy. The woman’s fallopian tube is where this happens before the fertilized egg moves into the uterus three or four days later. The fertilized egg is referred to as a zygote in this stage of the pregnancy. The zygote becomes an embryo during the stage in which it implants itself in the lining of the uterus. The placenta and the baby are the two divided parts of the embryo. During the six week of pregnancy the next important stage takes place, this is where the baby’s heart will begin to beat and blood will start to circulate throughout the body. At this stage the head, eyes, intestines, liver and umbilical cord start to form. During the 10th week the embryo moves into the next major pregnancy stage by becoming a fetus. The facial features and limbs become more perceptible during this stage of pregnancy as well as the formation of the baby’s external genitalia. The vital organs of the baby will be formed and functioning by the end of the pregnancy stage. After the 14th week, the second trimester stage of pregnancy begins. The risk of miscarriage is significantly reduced during this stage of the pregnancy. At this stage the babies reproductive organs are developing and hair will begin to grow along with eyelids, fingernails and toenails. A woman may begin to feel some of the babies movement at this stage especially if it is her second or more pregnancy. The next pregnancy milestone is reaches in week eighteen when the babies inner ear bones are developed enough to respond to outside sounds. The brain begins to develop and ultrasound images show the babies movements more by week twenty-two. Pregnancy reaches another important stage at week twenty-six when the third trimester begins and the baby has a good chance of survival. The baby begins to try and breath during week thirty. Gulping may give her hiccups since she is still surrounded by amniotic fluid. At forty weeks the final stage of pregnancy is reached. The baby can be born at any time during this stage and is fully developed. This stage can go on for up to two weeks past the due date and that is not unusual. |
