How to Increase the Chances of a Twin Pregnancy

Many women long for a twin pregnancy since there is something fascinating about twins. In recent years the number has increased of women who have twin pregnancies or even higher numbers including sextuplets. There are many reasons why this has happened. So women don’t have to have another pregnancy to give an only child a sibling many women want to have a twin pregnancy. Having twins is the perfect answer for women who want to experience the trauma of birth only once.

A lot of people have a fascination with twins and research has been done in how to increase a woman’s chances of having a twin pregnancy. There are some fairly unusual results. A higher chance of twin pregnancy may be influenced by the mother’s diet. Certain cultures have more twins and in one of these their primary food is yams. Therefore, a theory developed that women in this culture are helped by a certain chemical in yams to have a twin pregnancy. More than just yams is obviously needed to have a healthy pregnancy but if you want to consider a twin pregnancy it is an interesting theory.

A woman who is breastfeeding when she conceives is more likely to have twins than someone who isn’t breastfeeding. The amount of calcium in a woman’s system is reduced by breastfeeding which effects the egg during conception and the chances of a twin pregnancy are increased during ovulation.

Twin pregnancy is more likely for older women. In older women the increased ovulation of multiple eggs can lead to a higher chance of the women having a twin pregnancy. An increased chance of multiple pregnancies is also possible through fertility treatments. Twins or more are also more likely in individuals with African backgrounds.

A twin is more likely to have a twin pregnancy themselves despite the common theory that twins actually skip a generation. This is a point to consider if you are twin who wants to get pregnant. There is also an increased chance of a pregnancy if you have a family history of it or if your partner has a lot of twins.
