Small Pox: Symptoms and PreventionSymptomsA high fever and a severe headache that comes on suddenly with a pain in the back and a flushed face are the symptoms of small pox. Reddish blisters will appear on the face and the wrists on the third day and then it will enlarge to the size of 25 naya paisa coin. The fever usually goes down after the eruption. One the eighth or ninth day the worst is over and it dries up to a tough brown scab that takes several weeks before it falls off. When the scabs begin to fall off the danger of the infection is at the greatest. Prevention MethodsA fresh serum vaccination along with a yearly revaccination or every three years at the most will help prevent a child from getting this dreadful disease. All house members should be vaccinated if a child gets small pox and the child should be admitted to the infectious disease hospital. Municipal authorities should be notified at the earliest possible opportunity if there is a case of small pox in the neighborhood. Isolate the child and their clothes in a room that is thoroughly disinfected if you can’t take the child to the hospital. Smear vasaline over the scabs when the eruptions start drying. Use cool boric acid solution to wash the child’s eyes otherwise they will have a swarting sensation in the eyes. Take two tablespoons of soda bicarbonate and mix in a bucket of water to help relieve itching. Every day immerse the child for two to six minutes in this water. Salt gives rise to more itching so a child’s diet should be mild and soft with no salt. There is the likelihood of a secondary infection if the child scratches the spots. Scratching the blisters will usually result in pock marks. No mark will be left from the disease if the blisters are allowed to dry and fall off naturally on their own. Bury all the fallen scabs deep in the earth once you collect them. Hot things like cardamoms or ginger should not be given to the child under any condition. Curds, bananas, oranges and other cooling things should be given to the child. Two baths with hot water and carbolic soap should be given to the child after they recover before they are allowed to mix with others. |
